Your child’s first dental visit is vital when it comes to your child’s oral health and dental experience. You should bring them into Children's Dental Care & Orthodontics to see Dr. Carla LaLande six months after the first tooth has erupted or no later than their first birthday, whichever occurs first. This appointment will help your child adopt a positive and dedicated dental routine as well as familiarize them with the dental instruments and oral hygiene tools in a relaxing, fun, and friendly way.
During this appointment, Dr. Carla LaLande will examine your child’s mouth to detect dental cavities, evaluate tooth growth and development, identify any abnormal facial development, teach proper oral hygiene techniques and routines, and provide guidance regarding oral habits. Depending on your child’s mood and behavior, our team might take a few X-rays of your child’s mouth to examine the tooth roots and underlying bone.
To take good care of your child’s teeth, it’s recommended to wipe their chompers and their gums with a thin, wet washcloth or a gauze pad. You can use an infant toothbrush and water if you desire, but it’s recommended to forgo toothpaste until they are about 3 years old. If your child doesn’t have teeth yet, make sure you wipe their gums regularly. When your child is teething, feel free to massage their gums, give them healthy, cold teethers, or give them a child dose of infant Tylenol or fever-reducing medication for pain.
