Your child is about to lose their first tooth. You know what this means: it’s time for the Tooth Fairy! But you’ve never taken on this responsibility before. How does one become the Tooth Fairy? Dr. Hunter, Dr. Coe, and our team are happy to offer some fun ideas.
Your child will lose their baby teeth from about age five until about age seven. You will want to set an expectation regarding the Tooth Fairy when your child’s first baby tooth is lost. How much money will the Tooth Fairy leave? A Tooth Fairy poll conducted by Delta Dental shows that over the last decade, the Tooth Fairy has paid between $1.50 and $2.50 on average for each tooth. Instead of having the Tooth Fairy leave money, you may also consider leaving small toys or another reward.
Tooth Fairy Encouragement
In order to encourage proper, consistent brushing habits, incorporate the Tooth Fairy in your child’s dental care education. You may consider telling your child that the Tooth Fairy pays more for cavity-free teeth. Another way to encourage your child to brush and floss every day is to write him or her notes from the Tooth Fairy. You can find printable Tooth Fairy note cards online or you can design letters on your own with small paper, small handwriting, and even glitter “fairy dust.”
If your child misplaces a tooth that has fallen out, help your child to write a letter to the Tooth Fairy. He or she can explain the situation and perhaps suggest that the Tooth Fairy look in certain places for the tooth. Another unforeseen circumstance may arise if the “Tooth Fairy” doesn’t have any cash on hand. This being the case, you can write an IOU letter. You could explain to your child that lots of children are losing their baby teeth and sometimes this happens on the same day. Leaving assurance that the reward will be delivered the next night is usually sufficient to appease a child in these circumstances.
